Exhibition Overview

Pop-up books are a unique fusion of literature and art. They captivate us with the ingenious paper mechanisms designed by artists, where turning, folding, pulling, and flipping reveal not only playful storytelling but also a rich history of human interaction with knowledge.

Originally, pop-up books were primarily targeted at adults, featuring academic calculation tools and technical manuals. After the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, the audience gradually expanded to children, and pop-up books became a mainstream publishing format.

In terms of design, early pop-up books featured manual turntables, morphing flaps, integrated perspective scenes, and gradually evolved to automatically sprung 3D forms, incorporating modern sound and light technologies. These mechanical innovations mark the progression of production techniques over different eras. Content often reflected the social and cultural trends of the time, connecting pop-up book history with developments in printing, society, warfare, and even the growing recognition of children’s rights.

The 1932 publication of Jack and the Beanstalk is recognized as one of the earliest seminal pop-up books and serves as a conceptual anchor for this exhibition. The exhibition combines large-scale fairy-tale scenes with interactive installations, revealing the original techniques and essence of pop-up books while highlighting the playful stories and unique meanings of classic works.
