Starting from the 2000, the College of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University was renamed the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), and the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering was incorporated into the newly formed college. Academically, the EECS College is organized into two divisions: the Electrical Engineering Division—which includes the Department and Graduate Institute of Electrical Engineering, the Graduate Institute of Photonics and Optoelectronics, the Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering, and the Graduate Institute of Electronics Engineering—and the Computer Science Division, composed of the Department and Graduate Institute of Computer Science and Information Engineering.

This construction project was initiated to meet the academic development needs of the NTU EECS College and to address the shortage of research laboratories. Given the constraints of public funding, the project is entirely financed through fundraising efforts. It has received commitments from BenQ Corporation and AU Optronics, which will jointly construct the building and donate it to the university upon completion. Both companies have also agreed to contribute one percent of the construction budget toward the installation of public art.

Xu, Li-Xian’s ‘Stairs’: Using the circular arch, a distinctive feature of NTU’s architecture, as a structural element for the sculpture. Four identical components, at different heights and angles, form a multiple rhythmic structure. From a single circular shape, it becomes a complete sculpture through combination. The dynamic lines ultimately become straight lines, representing a fair and impartial attitude towards dealing with things. It symbolizes students having rules after receiving education, and excellent students, after collaborative integration, can achieve success.
