The Hualien County Stone Sculpture Museum presents the sculpture exhibition “Inheritance”, featuring recent significant works by Istanbul-based Turkish artist Ümit Turgay Durgun. Centered on the themes of “inheritance” and “transformation,” the exhibition employs diverse media—including stone, stainless steel, and bronze—to explore the dynamic relationships between time, civilization, and the evolution of life. It also once again highlights Hualien’s role as a major hub of stone sculpture art in Taiwan and its ongoing dialogue with international contemporary sculpture.

Ümit Turgay Durgun’s practice spans street graffiti, public art, and sculpture. Deeply inspired by ancient civilizations, mythological narratives, and architectural structures, he skillfully introduces contemporary vocabulary into classical craftsmanship, transforming a sense of historical gravity into a visual language with a contemporary rhythm. Some of his works incorporate built-in programmed control systems; through slow and precise movements, the sculptures are endowed with life-like dynamic motion. Through interactive engagement with these moving works, viewers can experience the tension and rhythm woven by the sculptures within space.

A newly unveiled work in this exhibition, Rise (We Coexist), guides viewers to reflect on the biological, cultural, and emotional memories they themselves carry, allowing “inheritance” to be understood not merely as a retrospective act, but as an ongoing process of transformation.
