Located on the west side of Tainan Park in North District, Tainan City, this site is designated as a historical monument: the Former Japanese Imperial Army 2nd Infantry Regiment Officer’s Quarters.
During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, the site housed the Tainan-Penghu Garrison Headquarters. In the early Japanese colonial period, the Imperial Japanese Army continued to use the area for military purposes, later converting it into residential quarters.
Under the Republic of China government, the site was temporarily leased by the Taiwan Provincial College of Engineering (the predecessor of National Cheng Kung University) for use as faculty dormitories, with additional buildings constructed (including the current No. 38 building). Following the relocation of the munitions factory to Nantou, the military abandoned the area, leveling most structures and leaving only the existing dormitory cluster.
In 2012, the Ministry of National Defense handed the site over to the Tainan City Government. To enhance its management and usage, the Cultural Affairs Bureau offered seven of the better-preserved houses to artists for residency. In 2013, the site was officially inaugurated as the “321 Lane Art Village”, and our company was selected by the Cultural Affairs Bureau to curate House No. 38.
